Welcome to Monkey Music – magical musical activity classes for babies and toddlers in Comely Bank, Murrayfield and Corstorphine.

My name is Rachael Huggins and I have been lucky enough to be involved with Monkey Music since 2006 when I started classes with my baby daughter in London.  As a new Mum I was so impressed by what I saw, experienced and learnt that I soon realized that a weekly 30 minute class wouldn’t be enough for us! So started our lifelong journey with Monkey!

As we progressed through the four age specific musical curricula and I saw how much effort had gone into developing each stage, I was amazed to see what each Monkey Music child was capable of and so. In 2008, I bought my own Monkey Music franchise in North Edinburgh.

Now, I feel so privileged to be a part of many Edinburgh children's lives.  To work with families, watching siblings develop and learn, to delight in teaching and to watch and be amazed in each and every class is a wonderful feeling.

If you’re looking for fantastic children’s activities in North Edinburgh, come along an experience Monkey Music’s awarding winning music classes for babies and young children in Comely Bank, Murrayfield and Corstorphine.  We would love to meet you

Monkey Music classes in North Edinburgh are a wonderful way to watch your child’s musical interest and ability flourish.  There are loads of opportunities for the children to experiment with percussion instruments and to have fun singing original songs as well as popular nursery rhymes, musical games and exciting movement ideas.

Each curricula stage at Monkey Music holds challenges for the children that seemed unbelievable.  However the resources and activities were amazing and I saw how much effort went into developing each and every class in the term.  What I found most amazing was seeing what each Monkey Music baby, toddler and preschool child is truly capable of when they learn in a structured educational environment.

A Rock’n’Roll baby can start Monkey Music when they are 3 months old and as their hearing has developed to hearing sounds coming from above and below it is now time to take them on a journey where we can develop those hearing skills and allow them to follow and track new sounds and experiences.  We use a wide range of sensory sounds and props and take time to let the babies explore all the new amazing things on offer to them.  Our use of traditional nursery songs and rhymes as well as our specifically designed baby curricula make this the most magical stage to start Monkey Music.

A Heigh-ho toddler is all about exploring spaces - musical and physical and as children get to their feet and start to experience their world we can learn far more about starting and stopping, playing instruments without intervention from their grown up and banging with great gusto whilst experiencing and handling several different percussion sounds.

A  Jiggety-Jig  child learns to work far more independently and has full responsibility for their instruments.  The children share and take turns, learn how to play in groups and start to play sometimes at the front of the class which is just for fun but allows them to grow in confidence.  Jiggety-Jiggers love learn lots of songs whilst play acting and being more physical with all their activities; running, jumping, spinning and singing!

Ding- Dong is where all the learning comes together and our 3-5 year old children go on a 2 year course learning all about the world of the orchestra.  They have homework each week and they learn to make instruments from the 4 orchestral families, they meet musicians who play music for them, they study Peter and the Wolf and the Carnival of Animals, learn all about different styles of music from all over the world and they also learn early years graphic notation where they are reading and starting to develop an ear to compose their own songs.  The teaching method in this curricula is remarkable and each child learns in a  clear and educational way preparing them for Primary School.  Most children complete Ding-Dong and will start learning an instrument at this stage.  Music teachers across Edinburgh are now recognizing how prepared a Monkey Music child is having studied the Ding-Dong curricula.

At Monkey Music Comely Bank, Murrayfield and Corstorphine we realize the importance of variety and we use age specific instruments in each of our music classes so that each child has their own set of instruments every week.  There is no end to the "music" that can be created in classes and we always have great fun experimenting with our sounds!   The musical games and endless additional resources from hula hoops to several varieties of parachute can ensure that the fun factor is for all.

Since 2008, when I brought my North Edinburgh Monkey Music franchise, I have been so privileged to be a part of many Edinburgh children's weeks in my own classes and also in a number of Edinburgh nursery schools.  I have worked with many hundreds of families over the years and been so privileged in seeing how amazing each and every child can be.

It has been great to have external recognition for the work we do her with our music classes and we have been awarded Best Preschool Activity by MADE Magazine, Best Preschool Class for children aged 0-2 by Mums in the Know and we continue to be involved in Edinburgh's nursery schools and playgroups by childcare professionals who understand the specialist learning we offer at Monkey Music and the very special professional music teachers who work with their children.  Lessons combine energy, music, song, stimulating resources, colourful props and magic to capture each child's imagination and encourage them to learn in wonderfully secure, fun environment.

Monkey Music classes are a wonderful way to watch your child’s musical interest and ability flourish.  There are loads of opportunities for the children to experiment with percussion instruments and to have fun singing original songs as well as popular nursery rhymes, musical games and exciting movement ideas. So, come along and join in the fun!
