Welcome to my classes in

Dulwich and Herne Hill

Rebecca Maskell

If you’re looking for a fun and stimulating activity for your baby or pre-school child, you’ve come to the right place. At Monkey Music Dulwich and Herne Hill I offer a range of classes individually tailored for each age group. By singing songs – original and traditional, using actions and engaging with colourful props and percussion instruments, children build confidence, improve their vocabulary and coordination, and develop vital life skills. My classes are also designed to encourage positive communication between parent and child, as well as nurture a lifetime love of music.

I am a professional musician and graduate of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where I studied piano and ‘cello. The first franchisee for Monkey Music, I continue to thoroughly enjoy teaching, taking great pleasure in seeing parents return to my classes – one mother is on her sixth child with Monkey Music!

So why not come along to a complimentary class? Click the ‘Free class booking enquiry’ button below and we’ll be in touch.

Our Musical Story

Monkey Music began in Dulwich and Herne Hill and was one of the first pre-school children’s music activities of its kind. Our music classes have offered a consistently high quality musical experience to young children since 1993.

Both the founder, Angie Coates and Rebecca Maskell who took over the area from Angie attended the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Angie ( a little younger than Rebecca!) studying the oboe and Rebecca studying the ‘cello and piano. They have nine children between them!

Since then it has gone from strength to strength without compromising our high standards.

What Monkey Music Has To Offer

As a new born baby rapidly adjusts to the outside world, their hearing is already accurately responding to sounds and familiar noises. Singing to your baby not only soothes but encourages them to find the source and focus creating the all-important bond between parent and child. By three months the part of your baby’s brain that helps hearing and language becomes more receptive and that is why our catchy songs with strong pulse appeal to very young babies with short attention spans.

Silence is golden and we encourage all the children to appreciate the sounds around them in the outside world as well as the musical ones made in our classes. Each specific age group and class builds on the last so that when the children are ready to leave Monkey Music at four years old they are equipped with a sound musical knowledge far beyond their years.

Monkey Music isn’t just about singing songs and dancing. Thought goes into the presentation of songs and activities with the inevitable benefits of speech development as well as vital listening skills which can only assist the children in the school years ahead. Singing, and feeling confident to sing is a joy often lost as we grow older and become more inhibited, so our relaxed approach can also benefit the carers that accompany the children to the classes!

So Why Monkey Music?

Monkey Music’s teachers in Dulwich and Herne Hill undergo a rigorous training procedure before embarking on their own classes. All have a sound musical background as well as bringing their own individual skills to the classes enabling them to easily communicate to very young babies of three months up to pre-school children of four years. Our baby/toddler/pre-school music classes are small and tailor-made for children and families to enjoy together. Monkey Music makes full use of the 30-minute sessions encouraging children to have fun with music as well as learning to appreciate and listen not only to the songs and activities but more importantly to each other.

During our Monkey Music classes in Dulwich and Herne Hill we teach the children original songs as well as traditional nursery rhymes in four separate classes according to their age in order for the children to benefit and learn as much as possible from the experience.

Monkey Music provides excellent resources to support the material such as high quality percussion instruments – not toys, which provide appealing and clear sounds which young children can easily appreciate and comfortably listen to. Visually stimulating props bring alive the songs to make learning fun and stimulating.

Monkey Music is Fun For All

Joining a pre-school music class like Monkey Music is much more than a 30 minute weekly dose of singing along. Parents, grandparents, nannies and child minders enjoy the classes just as much as the children and often make lifelong friends in the process. I still meet up with some ‘grown ups’ from classes over the years and keep in touch with the progress of their children – some who are now at university!!

 So What’s Next?

All you have to do now is give us a try! We offer a free complimentary class to whet your appetite and give you the opportunity to see what we have to offer. Word of mouth is a powerful tool and most new babies and pre-school children attend our classes because it has been recommended by a friend. As parents ourselves and Monkey Music teachers we do our best to offer fun quality music classes and an exciting learning experience come rain come shine!

I am always available to answer questions and offer advice so just drop me an email and I will do my best to help you.
