Hello! I’m Helly Summerly and I’m delighted to be bringing award winning Monkey Music classes to Ealing and Acton. As a singer and a Mum, I’m passionate about giving babies and young children the opportunity to experience quality, live music from an early age, both by listening as well as participating in making music themselves. Your first class is complimentary so why not book today and come and see us very soon!

I first discovered Monkey Music when I was looking for music classes to take my own baby daughter to whilst I was on maternity leave. As a musician myself, I was keen to find something that incorporated key musical elements whilst also being enjoyable for my daughter. We went to our first Monkey Music class when she was just a few months old, and I was immediately impressed by the musical content of the classes we attended. And seeing the delight on my daughter’s face each week when we she recognised her favourite Monkey songs quickly made it the highlight of our week! When the opportunity arose for me to take on my own Monkey Music franchise in Ealing and Acton, I realised I had found the perfect way to combine my passion for music and singing, with my love of babies and interest in the important role that music can play in child development.

Monkey Music classes are tailored around a proven and progressive curriculum for babies from as young as 3 months up until school age. Even in our early Rock’n’Roll classes, babies are introduced to the fundamental musical elements such as pitch, pulse, dynamics, rhythm and tempo. Even though it may be a while before they can name these by their proper technical terms, by introducing these elements into their sound world early on, we are helping to nurture a lifetime of interest in music. As our babies and toddlers move up to our Heigh-Ho and Jiggety-Jig classes, they build on the key elements they learned in Rock’n’Roll and we introduce more age appropriate instruments, as well developing key social skills to help prepare them for nursery and eventually school. In Ding-Dong our children begin to learn about and interact with instruments of the orchestra, and start to give names to the key musical elements we’ve been working with since Rock’n’Roll.

Above all, Monkey Music classes are fun as we know that babies and children learn through play! Each class is characterised by live singing, a set of beautifully crafted percussion instruments for each individual child to explore, and a combination of both original songs as well as well-loved nursery rhymes for our children and carers to enjoy singing together in class and during the week at home. And of course no class is complete without the appearance of Monkey and Mo!

Our venues are carefully chosen to be safe and easily accessible for our babies, children and their carers, and to provide inspiring spaces to make music. Where possible, we also try to partner with local businesses to provide opportunities for carers to meet afterwards for a coffee and make new friends with their Monkey Music classmates.

As a Mum myself, I also fully understand that babies and toddlers often have their own individual routines and agendas! At Monkey Music, we are always guided primarily by the needs of the babies and children, and what they and their carers feel comfortable with. In Rock’n’Roll particularly, young babies are welcome to be fed, changed or just cuddled at any time. They’ll still be taking in an enormous amount just by being rocked gently to the beat of the music!

After lots of research and study of babies and children, our classes are very deliberately only 30 minutes long. We cover a lot in that period of time, and we know that any longer can be a little overwhelming for tiny growing brains that are taking so many new things in.

I currently teach all the Monkey Music classes in Ealing and Acton myself. I am a trained classical singer, having studied at Oxford University where I held a choral scholarship. I have performed as a soloist with many of London’s leading chamber choirs, and feature on over 20 commercial recordings. I have performed on Radio 3 on several occasions and continue to give regular live performances (when I’m not busy teaching Monkey Music or being a Mum!)

I look forward to meeting you and welcoming you to one of our classes very soon!
