Welcome to Monkey Music in High Barnet, Mill Hill and Whetstone.
I discovered Monkey Music in 2002 when my little girl was eighteen months old and the class quickly became one of the highlights of our week. She loved hearing all the new songs and she was fascinated by the colourful, comical props. When it was time to run, march, skip, twirl or fly around the hall, she would laugh out loud with excitement! Looking around the circle at all the wide-eyed little faces, I began to realise that the possibility of teaching Monkey Music myself was a very appealing one.
I come from a family of professional musicians and I studied the piano and flute until I left school. Ever since starring in Alice in Wonderland at the age of six, I had wanted to act and so, after university, I did postgraduate training at drama school and then worked, mainly in the theatre for eight years before having a baby. Between acting jobs, out of necessity rather than vocation, I began teaching the piano and was surprised to find that I enjoyed it. When I became a mum, I knew that acting work away from home was no longer an option, but I needed to do something creative that fulfilled the performer in me. I was always making up silly songs to entertain my daughter (and myself!) as we pottered around together - it's amazing how many words rhyme with nappy....! We tried a few different baby music classes, and when we found Monkey Music, everything seemed to fall into place.
Monkey Music has given me the opportunity to combine my musical, performance and teaching skills with running a business, which I can fit around the needs of my little girl. It is tremendously satisfying to watch the children responding to the progressive curriculum as their physical confidence, social skills and musicality develop. Best of all is when I see children and grown ups alike having fun the way we used to.

News

As the Spring Term draws to a close and the weather finally shows promise of warming up a little, there are some exciting new developments at Monkey Music (High Barnet, Mill Hill and Whetstone)!
Next term, I am very pleased to be opening a venue in Whetstone at last. Our Thursday morning session, which has been located at St Andrews in Totteridge for more than four years, is moving down the hill to Christ Church at Whetstone, Oakleigh Park North, N20 9AR. Christ Church is close to Whetstone High Road and very convenient for shopping or a nice cuppa before of after your class, with a small car park just outside the hall and unrestricted parking on both Oakleigh Park North and Oakleigh Road North.
Due to popular demand, we are also adding a Wednesday morning in High Barnet, which will be taught by the fabulous Meri Bartley. Meri has small children of her own and is also a ballet and flamenco dancer, so I know that her classes will be full of fun!
I am thrilled to tell you that on April 22 and 23, we will be running some promotional classes at Belmont Children's Farm, The Ridgeway, Mill Hill, London NW7 1QT. This is a fantastic new North London venue for grown ups and children alike. There is a multitude of animals to look at and hold, a really nice cafe (I can recommend their coffee and waffles!) and some interesting activities for children of all ages taking place in their educational room. Our promotional classes will be for mixed ages (6 months to 4 years) and free of charge for farm members and paying visitors. To book a place in a promotional class, please mail me at the address below. For more information about the farm, including their admission fees, please go to www.belmontfarm.co.uk
Finally, if you have ever thought you might like to teach pre-school music, now is the time to contact me! To teach Monkey Music, you need to have a strong singing voice, a genuine love of babies and small children, a sociable personality and a car. A background in performance or teaching is helpful, but not essential. Do get in touch if you would like to find out more.
To book a complimentary class, or talk to me about any of the above, phone 020 8449 4025 or email katy.miller@monkeymusic.co.uk. I look forward to hearing from you.
