Hello and welcome to Monkey Music Muswell Hill, Highgate & Crouch End!My name is Gen West and I’ve been running the area since January 2000, having previously been a teacher at Monkey Music in Muswell Hill and Chelsea. My love of music started as a small child when I spent hours dancing with my mother in the kitchen and crashing about with saucepans and wooden spoons. Ballet shoes and the recorder took over, then the clarinet, which became my passion for many years. After a spell teaching young children languages in Spain and a career setting up European concert tours, my daughter, Tilly, was born and I swapped trips abroad for days in the kitchen, dancing and listening to saucepans and wooden spoons again! I heard about Monkey Music through a friend and just knew it was for me. Angie’s enthusiasm and energy made it all look so easy. I could combine running a business with looking after my baby. So I rushed around learning songs and finding crazy props, I am well known for the ‘nodding pony’ and the pop-up spider! I even found time to have my second child Max. By now, saucepans had been replaced by guiros, woodblocks, maracas and castanets. Five years later, the business is thriving as is Oliver, the latest addition to the family. The lessons are great fun and I feel very lucky to be working in a room full of excited children, not to mention the adults! It is very satisfying to watch the children progress; musically, socially and physically. It’s fulfilling to know that actions we have practised in class have encouraged babies to crawl and to wave, toddlers to socialise and to share (yes it is possible!) and older children to develop their musicality.
