Welcome to our classes

We are very excited to announce that our live face to face classes will be back in April. Your wellbeing is of the utmost importance to us, so sessions will be limited in size so that they feel safe and personal. With captivating and stimulating music and activities, you can't get much better than our multi-award winning classes! See you soon!

So why choose Monkey Music?  As baby and toddler activities go, you can’t get much better than our multi-award winning classes. Despite having so many activities to choose from, parents repeatedly choose to bring their little ones to Monkey Music, often starting when their children are just a few month’s old and staying with us until they are ready to begin school.

A very good and wise friend of mine gave me some great advice when I was pregnant with my son - she said that one of the best gifts that we can give to our children is to encourgae in them the love of music. My family did just that for me and I can't remember a time when I didn't sing, in all sorts of situations and performing many styles of music. So, when my baby was just a few months old, I made sure that he and I had the opportunity to experience as many different musical activities as possible. And we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves along the way. The journey is by no means over and my own budding composer is constantly writing his own brand of funny songs, as well as nurturing an ambition to play the harp!

The first time I experienced Monkey Music I was completely bowled over. The classes really do set the benchmark for preschool activities, with an extensive, progressive curriculum that has been honed for 25 years! And the four age groups mean that babies, toddlers and young children have the opportunity to learn at a pace that is right for them, whilst having huge amounts of fun in the process.

What can you expect from a Monkey Music Class?  The Monkey Music experience has a wonderful flow and structure to it and classes have both familiar and new activities, each week building on what your little ones have learned in previous weeks. And our teachers aren’t just teachers when they are in class: they are musicians, singers, performers, actors, puppeteers, comedians, baby and child ‘whisperers’ and more. It’s our mission to perfect the art of capturing and keeping the attention of our audience so that they get the most from their weekly visit with Monkey!

Apart from the fact that our classes are a beautiful way of introducing babies and young children to the world of music, we also start them on a gentle journey down the path to nursery, kindergarten and school. We have musical activities that teach skills such as sharing, tidying up (you'd be amazed at how early children start to learn these types of skills!), socialising with other babies and children, listening and watching and of course, lots of fun and games with plenty of multi-sensory and themed props and real musical instruments. And the activities in class will give you lots of ideas for activities to do and play at home with your little one. Our progressive, 4 stage curriculum contains more than 300 songs, musical games and movement activities and is a mixture of our own specially written songs and rhymes blended with some which are better known.

One mum and teacher wrote, “I’m really pleased to be back at Monkey Music with my second baby. I experienced several different music groups with my eldest son and this (Monkey Music) is the best by far. The structure is very well thought through and I can already see my son growing and beginning to develop those social and group skills that will be key for him when he eventually goes to school.”

Who should bring their babies and preschool children to Monkey Music?  Well, everyone really! Mummies, Daddies, Grandmas and Granddads, Aunts, Uncles, child minders and nannies, all bring their children and 'very important little people' to class.  Monkey Music regularly becomes the highlight of the busy family week, particularly as it is a shared experience that soon becomes an important part of the family routine, with songs being sung in the car, the bath, at bedtime.

And if the time comes for you to return to work, Monkey Music is often the only regular activity that parents choose to continue with.

And when can you start Monkey Music?  You can join one of our sessions when your baby is just three months of age. Our beautiful Rock’n’Roll classes are designed to take advantage of your baby’s development over the weeks and months, slowly moving from the focus on you, to the ever expanding world that they just love to explore. We’ll introduce them to the world of music in a gentle but stimulating way, with lots of sensory activities, props and instruments.

And if you can’t make it to our baby classes, then you can still join the fun at any time. All children are born with innate musicality and if you nurture this early enough, your baby or child is much more likely to go on to achieve their full musical potential. And as we now know, it seems that early exposure to music, rhythm and rhyme has many benefits, particularly when is comes to developing language and numerical skills.

What’s next?  If you’d like to know more about Monkey Music’s children’s music classes in Dartford and Bexleyheath please feel free to get in touch. The Monkey Team

Tania Birch

I've been teaching Monkey Music since launching in the Dartford & Bexleyheath area in 2011. I've had the joy of welcoming many hundreds of babies and preschoolers into the magical world of Monkey, many of whom have stayed with me from 3 months to school age. Hope to meet you soon!

Is there any social distancing at Monkey Music Classes? From 19th July 2021, our class set up will ensure that our families participate in a Monkey Music experience at a comfortable social distance from each other. Families will be reminded that whilst some may feel comfortable letting their children socialise (especially if attending with friends), others may not and so they should still be vigilant and respect the wishes of other families.
Will it be necessary to wear a face covering to a Monkey Music session? From 19th July 2021, we are implementing a new policy where adult carers are required to wear a face covering until seated with their family on a mat in the classroom. Whilst remaining seated, the wearing of a face covering is optional. However, whilst moving around the classroom, adult carers should wear a face covering. The safety of our families is paramount and families are reminded to respect the wishes of other families who make a personal choice to wear a face covering at all times.
What is your Health and Safety plan around Covid-19? Please see our Monkey Music Covid-19 Health and Safety plan here which details the measures we are putting in place to keep everyone safe at Monkey Music.
What do the classes involve? Monkey Music is an interactive award winning musical curriculum. Classes are small and tailor-made for babies and young children who are grouped according to their age. Each child is accompanied by their carer. Little ones sing, dance and play musical instruments. Grown ups join in the fun too!
Do you offer ‘mixed age’ classes? Because of the progressive nature of our curricula which is age specific, we do not offer regular weekly mixed classes. However, during the holidays, many of our teachers offer mixed age holiday workshops.
What do you expect of the children, do they have to sit down the whole time? Each class is carefully structured and formatted so that every child and carer is encouraged to join in with the fun. Classes are paced according to each age group with the opportunity for little ones to be up on their feet during ‘Time to Move’ and sitting with their carers during ‘Time to Play’ and ‘Time to Sleep’. Most children quickly learn what is happening next and Monkey helps them with friendly encouragement!
Why are Monkey Music classes 30 minutes long? Our classes have been honed and developed over 25 years and are designed to fully captivate babies and young children for the duration. The very interactive nature of every class means that our little monkeys need to rest again after 30 minutes of magical music making!
Why is Monkey Music more expensive than the other music groups around? Monkey Music has been established for over 25 years and is proud to have a rich musical heritage. We offer a unique and progressive learning experience for your child, which is supported by over 500 original songs and musical activities. Our talented teachers are carefully chosen and trained to offer the highest standard of pre-school music education.
What makes Monkey Music classes so special? Monkey Music classes are considered a leading light in pre-school education. Come along for a free class to see for yourself what make Monkey Music classes the highlight of the week for so many families across the UK!
What if I miss my usual class? Should you miss a class, or your teacher is unable to teach, you will be invited to join in at home with a link to a special pre-recorded Monkey Music class. You may enjoy this class as many times as you would like over the week. Subject to availability, it may also be possible for you to attend a class in person to catch up or make up for a missed class. Please speak to your teacher for more details.
What do I need to bring with me? Everything you need to enjoy our classes is made available by the teacher, however, should you prefer not to use the Monkey Music instruments provided at class (these will have been freshly santised for each customer prior to use), you may bring your own Monkey Music approved instruments purchased from our online shop or identical items bought elsewhere. You may also bring along your own small blanket for your child to sit on.
Can I bring a newborn baby too? Babes in arms accompanying older siblings are welcome in our classes free of charge, please speak to your local classes for more information.
Why don’t you offer drop-in classes? We value musical education as a fundamental part of early development, and as such our regular weekly classes are progressive to maximise the learning potential of each child.
Do I have to be musical? No! Our teachers will make you feel welcome whatever your musical ability.
Do I have to sing along? We love it when our families join in and your children benefit from hearing the sound of a familiar voice, no matter how good or bad! At step 4 of the roadmap, we are encouraging everyone to sing quietly and directly to their own children. Customers may enjoy our songs at home by purchasing our class specific download albums or books - all available from our online shop.
Can I bring an adult friend/relative to class? Unfortunately, due to Covid-19 restrictions, we ask that only one adult accompanies the child/children to Monkey Music classes.
Can I opt out of the membership fee? No, our online club is designed to support the learning experience of children at our regular classes and is a popular go-to places between classes to enjoy making Monkey Music at home.
Is it OK for me to take photos or video in class? No, we politely request that you refrain from taking photos or videos at class.
Why pay a membership fee? When enrolling in Monkey Music for the first time, a child becomes a member of our online Monkey Music Club. New members receive a Welcome Pack, including a Monkey Music T-shirt, beautiful sticker pack and milestone card as well as access to our online club which supports the child in their learning experience at Monkey Music. The membership fee is payable when registering each child in regular weekly classes at Monkey Music and we offer a discount to siblings who join at any stage. Siblings receive their own welcome pack and T-shirt to wear to class. Ask your local classes for more details.

At what age can my child start Monkey Music? From 3 months old.
How long is a class? Half an hour. Each 30 minute class is a significant step in our progressive curricula. Classes are carefully planned to maximise the attention span of a very young child so that they learn from sharing a rewarding, enjoyable and worthwhile experience.
Are all the teachers musically trained? All Monkey music teachers are specifically trained on delivering the Monkey Music curriculum. Many of them are professional musicians and teachers.
Are the classes different for each age group? Yes. Our curriculum is structured and progressive. Rock’n'Roll: from 3 months Heigh-Ho: from 12 months Jiggety-Jig: 2 + 3 year olds Ding-Dong: 3 + 4 year olds
Can babies relate to music at such a young age? The ear is the first organ to develop fully in the womb. From five months, an unborn baby can hear the world around them. Early exposure to music encourages babies to develop their musical ear which supports all aspects of early learning and development. Just as language skills are developed early in life, so is musical talent. Regardless of the level of music aptitude with which children are born, they must have formal and informal experiences in music to maintain that level of potential.
