Welcome to our classes

Our Autumn Term has started! We would love to welcome you to our award-winning baby and toddler music classes where we learn so much, whilst having lots of fun. Places are strictly limited and must be pre-booked. This is part of a number of precautions we have taken to keep our families and teachers safe at class. We hope to see you soon!

Trusted by parents since 1992, there are 4-stages of classes, tailored specifically to the needs of babies, toddlers and pre-school children between 3 months and 4 years of age. Our classes are designed to help develop language, physical and social skills, all through wonderful musical activities and live singing.

Research has shown that early exposure to music supports a child in almost all areas of development. At Monkey Music we believe that it’s important for babies and small children to be immersed in making music in a fun, exciting and structured environment. We have a wonderful, innovative and unique 4-stage program, written by professional musicians within the Early Years Foundation Stages framework. Whilst experiencing musical concepts such as pulse, rhythm, pitch, tempo and dynamics, our beautifully presented classes lay the foundations for future learning – all whilst having lots of fun!

Monkey Music has won many awards and has gained a reputation for high standards and uniqueness. We sing many original songs, as well as lots of traditional nursery rhymes for everyone to sing-a-long to.

Classes are 30 minutes long, and are jam-packed with musical activities and learning opportunities. Our teachers pour their hearts into preparing well structured classes, wowing the children and grown-ups with their wonderful singing voices, sound musical approach and professional delivery.

For babies from 3 months

Babies are born to love music! Music is invaluable to healthy development and has a tremendous effect on babies. Our baby classes are gentle, calm and full of wonder. Focusing on bonding and confidence, carers interact with their baby enjoying pulse based musical activities, fascinating sounds and sensory moments. Our classes are the perfect way to share precious time together, and to meet other babies and carers who live in your area.

For toddlers from 12 months

A more up-beat curriculum for a ‘busy’ age group that are raring to go! Heigh-Ho classes are full of action songs to develop co-ordination, spatial awareness and to enjoy the ‘beat’ together. We also focus on listening skills and language development, making lots of sounds together. Colourful props capture the imagination and hold concentration, and there are lots of opportunities to play percussion instruments.

For 2 + 3 year olds

Jiggety-Jig children are really starting to express themselves through music making, singing and dancing. They are encouraged to work a little more independently in this class, and through absorbing activities further develop social and language skills. These classes are slightly slower in pace to develop concentration. Musically, the children are starting to keep a steady beat and further explore rhythm, pitch, tempo and dynamics.

Ding Dong - not currently on offer, but please email us so we can help you find a class

For 3 + 4 year olds

Building on the foundations laid in Jiggety-Jig, Ding-Dong children are ready to progress their musical learning further and start to recognise graphics depicting sounds and rhythm notation. They are introduced to members of the orchestra with the opportunity to touch and play various instruments. From here they are all set for a wonderful musical future.

I am a passionate musician and performer, so when I became a mother I was keen to share a special musical experience with my children. I discovered Monkey Music and was hugely impressed with the quality of teaching, resources and the curricula. I became a Monkey Music teacher over 8 years ago and am now thrilled to be a franchisee. As well as extensive training in music, dance and drama, more recently I also gained an early childhood music teaching qualification with the British Kodaly Academy, covering music education from 0-7 years.

Growing up in tune with Monkey Music!

The Monkey Team

Heather Stockwell

I absolutely love singing and have been performing since I was 4 years old.

I am thrilled to be a Monkey Music teacher, and to have the privilege of being a part of each child’s development through their learning and enjoyment of music.

Rachel Williams

I grew up immersed in music and dance playing both the piano and clarinet, singing in choirs and attending the Royal Ballet School. I have a Drama degree and an early years music teaching qualification from the British Kodaly Academy. I love teaching Monkey Music and have been doing so for 9 years.

As of 15 October 2020, how does the new 3 Tier alert level affect Monkey Music classes? Currently, all Monkey Music classes at Covid-secure venues across the UK remain open to adult carers who bring children who live in the same household or who are in the same bubble. We will continue to monitor the situation closely. Please contact your local classes if you have specific questions about Monkey Music classes in your area
What is your Health and Safety plan around Covid-19? Please see our Monkey Music Covid-19 Health and Safety plan here which details the measures we are putting in place to keep everyone safe at Monkey Music.
What do the classes involve? Monkey Music is an interactive award winning musical curriculum. Classes are small and tailor-made for babies and young children who are grouped according to their age. Each child is accompanied by their carer. Little ones sing, dance and play musical instruments. Grown ups join in the fun too!
Do you offer ‘mixed age’ classes? Because of the progressive nature of our curricula which is age specific, we do not offer regular weekly mixed classes. However, during the holidays, many of our teachers offer mixed age holiday workshops.
What do you expect of the children, do they have to sit down the whole time? Each class is carefully structured and formatted so that every child and carer is encouraged to join in with the fun. Classes are paced according to each age group with the opportunity for little ones to be up on their feet during ‘Time to Move’ and sitting with their carers during ‘Time to Play’ and ‘Time to Sleep’. Most children quickly learn what is happening next and Monkey helps them with friendly encouragement!
Why are Monkey Music classes 30 minutes long? Our classes have been honed and developed over 25 years and are designed to fully captivate babies and young children for the duration. The very interactive nature of every class means that our little monkeys need to rest again after 30 minutes of magical music making!
Why is Monkey Music more expensive than the other music groups around? Monkey Music has been established for over 25 years and is proud to have a rich musical heritage. We offer a unique and progressive learning experience for your child, which is supported by over 500 original songs and musical activities. Our talented teachers are carefully chosen and trained to offer the highest standard of pre-school music education.
What makes Monkey Music classes so special? Monkey Music classes are considered a leading light in pre-school education. Come along for a free class to see for yourself what make Monkey Music classes the highlight of the week for so many families across the UK!
What if I miss my usual class? During our transition back to classes due to Covid-19, should you miss a class, or your teacher is unable to teach, you will receive a link to a special Monkey Music class to join in at home. You may enjoy this class as many times as you would like to over the week! Please speak to your teacher for more details.
What do I need to bring with me? Everything you need to enjoy our classes is made available by the teacher, however, should you prefer not to use the Monkey Music instruments provided at class (these will have been freshly santised for each customer prior to use), you may bring your own Monkey Music approved instruments purchased from our online shop or identical items bought elsewhere. You may also bring along your own small blanket for your child to sit on.
Can I bring a newborn baby too? Babes in arms accompanying older siblings are welcome in our classes free of charge, please speak to your local classes for more information.
Why don’t you offer drop-in classes? We value musical education as a fundamental part of early development, and as such our regular weekly classes are progressive to maximise the learning potential of each child.
Do I have to be musical? No! Our teachers will make you feel welcome whatever your musical ability.
Do I have to sing along? We love it when our customers join in and your children benefit from hearing the sound of a familiar voice, no matter how good or bad! However, current Government Guidelines don't allow for sing-along activities so for the time being our classes are directed and sung by the teacher only. Customers may enjoy our songs at home by purchasing our class specific download albums or books - all available from our online shop.
Can I bring an adult friend/relative to class? Unfortunately, due to Covid-19 restrictions, we ask that only one adult accompanies the child/children to Monkey Music classes.
Can I opt out of the membership fee? No, our online club is designed to support the learning experience of children at our regular classes and is a popular go-to places between classes to enjoy making Monkey Music at home.
Is it OK for me to take photos or video in class? No, we politely request that you refrain from taking photos or videos at class.
Why pay a membership fee? When enrolling in Monkey Music for the first time, a child becomes a member of our online Monkey Music Club. New members receive a Welcome Pack, including a Monkey Music T-shirt, beautiful sticker pack and milestone card as well as access to our online club which supports the child in their learning experience at Monkey Music. The membership fee is payable when registering each child in regular weekly classes at Monkey Music and we offer a discount to siblings who join at any stage. Siblings receive their own welcome pack and T-shirt to wear to class. Ask your local classes for more details.

Can I try a class before I sign up to a course? Yes. You and your child are invited along for a free complimentary class when making an initial booking enquiry.
At what age can my child start Monkey Music? From 3 months old.
How long is a class? Half an hour. Each 30 minute class is a significant step in our progressive curricula. Classes are carefully planned to maximise the attention span of a very young child so that they learn from sharing a rewarding, enjoyable and worthwhile experience.
Are all the teachers musically trained? All Monkey music teachers are specifically trained on delivering the Monkey Music curriculum. Many of them are professional musicians and teachers.
Are the classes different for each age group? Yes. Our curriculum is structured and progressive. Rock’n'Roll: from 3 months Heigh-Ho: from 12 months Jiggety-Jig: 2 + 3 year olds Ding-Dong: 3 + 4 year olds
Can babies relate to music at such a young age? The ear is the first organ to develop fully in the womb. From five months, an unborn baby can hear the world around them. Early exposure to music encourages babies to develop their musical ear which supports all aspects of early learning and development. Just as language skills are developed early in life, so is musical talent. Regardless of the level of music aptitude with which children are born, they must have formal and informal experiences in music to maintain that level of potential.
