Welcome to our classes

Our bookings are now open for September! Some of our classes are already full for the term, but we do still have plenty of spaces and we'd love to see you!

I’ve lived in Eltham for  almost 20 years and  spent 7 years taking my children to Monkey Music classes close by . After 18 years managing the classical recording schedules of EMI and Warner Classics, I realised it was time to start nurturing some of our younger budding musicians instead.

Coming to Monkey Music is a fabulous way to have fun with your baby or toddler while knowing everything they are doing, seeing and hearing will aid their development.  Music plays such an important role in the early development of a child.  Babies were born to love music after all! Our interactive classes and quality instruments engage the children in music-making in a fun and sociable environment.   They absorb so much without even realising they are learning!

We run classes on almost every day of the week and try to offer customers a 'catch-up' session if classes are missed due to illness, so you won't miss out.

As parents we naturally use music to sooth and calm our children, and research has shown that music can help with all areas of child development.  Our baby and toddler music classes contain action songs and rhymes to build language and numerical skills; playing along with hand-held instruments develops fine motor skills and co-ordination, and movement works on spatial awareness.  Our age-specific classes mean that your child is always experiencing a class appropriate for their development and enjoyment.

Rock’n’Roll (for babies from 3 months) Babies spend quality time with their carers learning to make sounds, moving their bodies in time to the music and developing their fine motor skills and co-ordination, whilst giving both adult and child some valuable social time! Our Magic Sounds and colourful props and puppets will captivate and delight our youngest little monkeys.  And grown-ups can be confident that everything is safe for their babies to use as we make sure everything is cleaned after each use.

Heigh-Ho (for toddlers from 12 months) By the time your little explorers reach their first birthday they will be looking for something more upbeat and fast-paced.  It's a very busy age! Learning how to respond to the music and then how to copy and practise what they hear, all the while practising their fine motor skills.  Our themed classes, interactive songs and fabulous percussion instruments are sure to grab their attention while helping to develop self-discipline and listening skills.

Jiggety-Jig (2 & 3 year olds).  By now, your little ones are likely to be more independent and want to play for themselves! We develop their sense of rhythm through dancing and singing in the class, playing with the percussion instruments and even composing for themselves.  They learn important lessons about boundaries, sharing and the social skills required for nursery or pre-school.

Pre-school 3 & 4 year olds love our Ding-Dong classes.  Fine tuning their ears to hear and understand musical patterns, using their eyes to recognise written music and growing their knowledge by learning about instruments of the orchestra. Often children are also at nursery or pre-school and we compliment all they are experiencing there by following the Early Years Foundation stages in our progressive curriculum.

Monkey Music Eltham operates in and around Eltham, New Eltham, Welling and Shooters Hill.

Monkey would love to meet you, so book your FREE Monkey Music class today – we look forward to meeting you and your family very soon.

"It's the highlight of the week and the best children's activity I've done in my 5 years of being a Mum. When they're not at classes they are often doing monkey music role play games at home."

We absolutely loved the session. I still know all the words to the familiar songs [and] was really nice for R, and F loved joining in too. Will definitely be signing up to next term. Thank you.

Kerry Hill

Hello from Monkey Music!  With more than 20 years' experience in the music industry, I can't wait to meet you and your child to show you how much fun music can be when you're a baby or toddler!

Is there any social distancing at Monkey Music Classes? From 19th July 2021, our class set up will ensure that our families participate in a Monkey Music experience at a comfortable social distance from each other. Families will be reminded that whilst some may feel comfortable letting their children socialise (especially if attending with friends), others may not and so they should still be vigilant and respect the wishes of other families.
Will it be necessary to wear a face covering to a Monkey Music session? From 19th July 2021, we are implementing a new policy where adult carers are required to wear a face covering until seated with their family on a mat in the classroom. Whilst remaining seated, the wearing of a face covering is optional. However, whilst moving around the classroom, adult carers should wear a face covering. The safety of our families is paramount and families are reminded to respect the wishes of other families who make a personal choice to wear a face covering at all times.
What is your Health and Safety plan around Covid-19? Please see our Monkey Music Covid-19 Health and Safety plan here which details the measures we are putting in place to keep everyone safe at Monkey Music.
What do the classes involve? Monkey Music is an interactive award winning musical curriculum. Classes are small and tailor-made for babies and young children who are grouped according to their age. Each child is accompanied by their carer. Little ones sing, dance and play musical instruments. Grown ups join in the fun too!
Do you offer ‘mixed age’ classes? Because of the progressive nature of our curricula which is age specific, we do not offer regular weekly mixed classes. However, during the holidays, many of our teachers offer mixed age holiday workshops.
What do you expect of the children, do they have to sit down the whole time? Each class is carefully structured and formatted so that every child and carer is encouraged to join in with the fun. Classes are paced according to each age group with the opportunity for little ones to be up on their feet during ‘Time to Move’ and sitting with their carers during ‘Time to Play’ and ‘Time to Sleep’. Most children quickly learn what is happening next and Monkey helps them with friendly encouragement!
Why are Monkey Music classes 30 minutes long? Our classes have been honed and developed over 25 years and are designed to fully captivate babies and young children for the duration. The very interactive nature of every class means that our little monkeys need to rest again after 30 minutes of magical music making!
Why is Monkey Music more expensive than the other music groups around? Monkey Music has been established for over 25 years and is proud to have a rich musical heritage. We offer a unique and progressive learning experience for your child, which is supported by over 500 original songs and musical activities. Our talented teachers are carefully chosen and trained to offer the highest standard of pre-school music education.
What makes Monkey Music classes so special? Monkey Music classes are considered a leading light in pre-school education. Come along for a free class to see for yourself what make Monkey Music classes the highlight of the week for so many families across the UK!
What if I miss my usual class? Should you miss a class, or your teacher is unable to teach, you will be invited to join in at home with a link to a special pre-recorded Monkey Music class. You may enjoy this class as many times as you would like over the week. Subject to availability, it may also be possible for you to attend a class in person to catch up or make up for a missed class. Please speak to your teacher for more details.
What do I need to bring with me? Everything you need to enjoy our classes is made available by the teacher, however, should you prefer not to use the Monkey Music instruments provided at class (these will have been freshly santised for each customer prior to use), you may bring your own Monkey Music approved instruments purchased from our online shop or identical items bought elsewhere. You may also bring along your own small blanket for your child to sit on.
Can I bring a newborn baby too? Babes in arms accompanying older siblings are welcome in our classes free of charge, please speak to your local classes for more information.
Why don’t you offer drop-in classes? We value musical education as a fundamental part of early development, and as such our regular weekly classes are progressive to maximise the learning potential of each child.
Do I have to be musical? No! Our teachers will make you feel welcome whatever your musical ability.
Do I have to sing along? We love it when our families join in and your children benefit from hearing the sound of a familiar voice, no matter how good or bad! At step 4 of the roadmap, we are encouraging everyone to sing quietly and directly to their own children. Customers may enjoy our songs at home by purchasing our class specific download albums or books - all available from our online shop.
Can I bring an adult friend/relative to class? Unfortunately, due to Covid-19 restrictions, we ask that only one adult accompanies the child/children to Monkey Music classes.
Can I opt out of the membership fee? No, our online club is designed to support the learning experience of children at our regular classes and is a popular go-to places between classes to enjoy making Monkey Music at home.
Is it OK for me to take photos or video in class? No, we politely request that you refrain from taking photos or videos at class.
Why pay a membership fee? When enrolling in Monkey Music for the first time, a child becomes a member of our online Monkey Music Club. New members receive a Welcome Pack, including a Monkey Music T-shirt, beautiful sticker pack and milestone card as well as access to our online club which supports the child in their learning experience at Monkey Music. The membership fee is payable when registering each child in regular weekly classes at Monkey Music and we offer a discount to siblings who join at any stage. Siblings receive their own welcome pack and T-shirt to wear to class. Ask your local classes for more details.

Can I try a class before I sign up to a course? Yes. You and your child are invited along for a free complimentary class when making an initial booking enquiry.
At what age can my child start Monkey Music? From 3 months old.
How long is a class? Half an hour. Each 30 minute class is a significant step in our progressive curricula. Classes are carefully planned to maximise the attention span of a very young child so that they learn from sharing a rewarding, enjoyable and worthwhile experience.
Are all the teachers musically trained? All Monkey music teachers are specifically trained on delivering the Monkey Music curriculum. Many of them are professional musicians and teachers.
Are the classes different for each age group? Yes. Our curriculum is structured and progressive. Rock’n'Roll: from 3 months Heigh-Ho: from 12 months Jiggety-Jig: 2 + 3 year olds Ding-Dong: 3 + 4 year olds
Can babies relate to music at such a young age? The ear is the first organ to develop fully in the womb. From five months, an unborn baby can hear the world around them. Early exposure to music encourages babies to develop their musical ear which supports all aspects of early learning and development. Just as language skills are developed early in life, so is musical talent. Regardless of the level of music aptitude with which children are born, they must have formal and informal experiences in music to maintain that level of potential.
