Welcome to our classes

A big Hello! from the exciting world of Monkey Music.  My name is Kate, and I am delighted to be offering the nationally acclaimed, Monkey Music classes for babies and toddlers in the Mid and North Bedfordshire area.

Monkey and Mo can't wait to welcome you to our Monkey Music Family!

My name is Kate and I am delighted to be offering the Nationally Acclaimed, Monkey Music classes for babies and toddlers in the Mid and North Bedfordshire area. As we return to venues we will be adhering to social distance guidelines and following health and safety procedures so that you all feel safe returning back at class.

My background is in Musical Theatre & Drama and am also a classically trained Opera Singer.

Music has always been an important part of my life from childhood to current day. From learning the Recorder, Violin and Flute at school I also began to focus on my singing which led to me being selected for the Hertfordshire County Youth Choir. At the end of my sixth form education, I gained hands on experience when I took a year out to work at a school for children with learning difficulties as a classroom assistant. This included the use of music for both sensory and development of children with special needs. My education continued when I went to university where my focus was upon performance, acting and vocal technique, I graduated with a BA Joint Honours degree in Musical Theatre and Drama.

Since university I have continued to focus my training upon opera, vocal training and performance technique and have performed professionally with Dorset Opera and I sing regularly with Chelsea Opera and Herts Opera.

In parallel I combined my interests in the world of theatre where I was the Front of House manager at The Radlett Centre in Hertfordshire.

When I discovered Monkey Music and the opportunities it offered myself personally it seemed the perfect match for me to use my skills as a manager and as a performer to provide a wonderful resource to pre-school children in Bedfordshire.

Watching how Monkey Music classes nurtured early development skills (Social, Language and Physical) in pre-school children through exploring and playing music was one of the main reasons why I wanted to be a part of this special “Monkey Music Family.” It is and will always be a privilege to create a very magical and musical environment to watch the parent and child relationship grow before me.

What sets Monkey Music apart from all other pre-school activities, is that just like school, it works on a structured curriculum which even at 3+ months of age, your baby embarks upon a musical journey that prepares and builds a foundation for them as they grow into young children and start full-time education.

It is wonderful to watch young babies start their musical journey, being captivated by singing and activities right through to making music on their own. The classes are full of beaming little faces, lots of smiles, fun and laughter and is a family gathering for Mums, Dads, Grandparents and Carers.

My classes are based in Great Denham, Westoning and Wavendon. However, it is my intention to open further classes throughout the region, so please get in touch if you have an interest in what Monkey Music can offer your child.

Where to go?

On Mondays, our Great Denham Community Hall venue is in the heart of Great Denham, Bedfordshire by the small parade of shops which includes a family run coffee shop which is perfect for a cup of coffee with Monkey Music friends after class.

On Thursdays, our classes take place in Westoning at Westoning Village Hall, Bedfordshire. There is plenty of parking available outside the venue and plenty of places in Flitwick to meet up after for a coffee.

On Friday, our classes take place in Wavendon at Wavendon Community Hall, Bedfordshire. There is an onsite car park and access to the venue is very good. This hall is one of our biggest venues and after class a lot of parents like to take their little ones to the large field behind and children's park to let off any energy that is left after class. Walking distance from this venue is Woburn Sands Emporium and Frosts so a great place to meet up after class.

What happens in class?

Monkey Music classes are delivered in a safe and secure environment with an emphasis on having fun. Each class is tailor made and designed to cover four specific age groups: -

Rock ‘n’ Roll (3+ months to 1 year)

Heigh-Ho (from 12 months)

Jiggety-Jig (2-3 years)

Ding-Dong (3 -4 years).

Within each class, elements of listening, learning, playing, singing, moving, dancing are incorporated into the songs to provide an exciting variety of children’s music activities. The songs are based around the theme of our lovely Monkey and Mo, teaching your child topics, such as; animals, weather, colours, instruments rhythms and seasonal celebrations all delivered within a structured curriculum.

Everyone is welcome- Mum’s, Dad’s, Grandmas and Granddads, Aunts, Uncles, child minders and nannies, all bring their little ones to class. Whether you are musical or not, come along to the classes, join in with the songs, activities and see your little one in action.

If you have any questions, then please contact me at any time. I look forward to meeting you and your “Little Monkey’s” to start their journey of …Nurturing a Lifetime of music

Is there any social distancing at Monkey Music Classes? From 19th July 2021, our class set up will ensure that our families participate in a Monkey Music experience at a comfortable social distance from each other. Families will be reminded that whilst some may feel comfortable letting their children socialise (especially if attending with friends), others may not and so they should still be vigilant and respect the wishes of other families.
Will it be necessary to wear a face covering to a Monkey Music session? From 19th July 2021, we are implementing a new policy where adult carers are required to wear a face covering until seated with their family on a mat in the classroom. Whilst remaining seated, the wearing of a face covering is optional. However, whilst moving around the classroom, adult carers should wear a face covering. The safety of our families is paramount and families are reminded to respect the wishes of other families who make a personal choice to wear a face covering at all times.
What is your Health and Safety plan around Covid-19? Please see our Monkey Music Covid-19 Health and Safety plan here which details the measures we are putting in place to keep everyone safe at Monkey Music.
What do the classes involve? Monkey Music is an interactive award winning musical curriculum. Classes are small and tailor-made for babies and young children who are grouped according to their age. Each child is accompanied by their carer. Little ones sing, dance and play musical instruments. Grown ups join in the fun too!
Do you offer ‘mixed age’ classes? Because of the progressive nature of our curricula which is age specific, we do not offer regular weekly mixed classes. However, during the holidays, many of our teachers offer mixed age holiday workshops.
What do you expect of the children, do they have to sit down the whole time? Each class is carefully structured and formatted so that every child and carer is encouraged to join in with the fun. Classes are paced according to each age group with the opportunity for little ones to be up on their feet during ‘Time to Move’ and sitting with their carers during ‘Time to Play’ and ‘Time to Sleep’. Most children quickly learn what is happening next and Monkey helps them with friendly encouragement!
Why are Monkey Music classes 30 minutes long? Our classes have been honed and developed over 25 years and are designed to fully captivate babies and young children for the duration. The very interactive nature of every class means that our little monkeys need to rest again after 30 minutes of magical music making!
Why is Monkey Music more expensive than the other music groups around? Monkey Music has been established for over 25 years and is proud to have a rich musical heritage. We offer a unique and progressive learning experience for your child, which is supported by over 500 original songs and musical activities. Our talented teachers are carefully chosen and trained to offer the highest standard of pre-school music education.
What makes Monkey Music classes so special? Monkey Music classes are considered a leading light in pre-school education. Come along for a free class to see for yourself what make Monkey Music classes the highlight of the week for so many families across the UK!
What if I miss my usual class? Should you miss a class, or your teacher is unable to teach, you will be invited to join in at home with a link to a special pre-recorded Monkey Music class. You may enjoy this class as many times as you would like over the week. Subject to availability, it may also be possible for you to attend a class in person to catch up or make up for a missed class. Please speak to your teacher for more details.
What do I need to bring with me? Everything you need to enjoy our classes is made available by the teacher, however, should you prefer not to use the Monkey Music instruments provided at class (these will have been freshly santised for each customer prior to use), you may bring your own Monkey Music approved instruments purchased from our online shop or identical items bought elsewhere. You may also bring along your own small blanket for your child to sit on.
Can I bring a newborn baby too? Babes in arms accompanying older siblings are welcome in our classes free of charge, please speak to your local classes for more information.
Why don’t you offer drop-in classes? We value musical education as a fundamental part of early development, and as such our regular weekly classes are progressive to maximise the learning potential of each child.
Do I have to be musical? No! Our teachers will make you feel welcome whatever your musical ability.
Do I have to sing along? We love it when our families join in and your children benefit from hearing the sound of a familiar voice, no matter how good or bad! At step 4 of the roadmap, we are encouraging everyone to sing quietly and directly to their own children. Customers may enjoy our songs at home by purchasing our class specific download albums or books - all available from our online shop.
Can I bring an adult friend/relative to class? Unfortunately, due to Covid-19 restrictions, we ask that only one adult accompanies the child/children to Monkey Music classes.
Can I opt out of the membership fee? No, our online club is designed to support the learning experience of children at our regular classes and is a popular go-to places between classes to enjoy making Monkey Music at home.
Is it OK for me to take photos or video in class? No, we politely request that you refrain from taking photos or videos at class.
Why pay a membership fee? When enrolling in Monkey Music for the first time, a child becomes a member of our online Monkey Music Club. New members receive a Welcome Pack, including a Monkey Music T-shirt, beautiful sticker pack and milestone card as well as access to our online club which supports the child in their learning experience at Monkey Music. The membership fee is payable when registering each child in regular weekly classes at Monkey Music and we offer a discount to siblings who join at any stage. Siblings receive their own welcome pack and T-shirt to wear to class. Ask your local classes for more details.

At what age can my child start Monkey Music? From 3 months old.
How long is a class? Half an hour. Each 30 minute class is a significant step in our progressive curricula. Classes are carefully planned to maximise the attention span of a very young child so that they learn from sharing a rewarding, enjoyable and worthwhile experience.
Are all the teachers musically trained? All Monkey music teachers are specifically trained on delivering the Monkey Music curriculum. Many of them are professional musicians and teachers.
Are the classes different for each age group? Yes. Our curriculum is structured and progressive. Rock’n'Roll: from 3 months Heigh-Ho: from 12 months Jiggety-Jig: 2 + 3 year olds Ding-Dong: 3 + 4 year olds
Can babies relate to music at such a young age? The ear is the first organ to develop fully in the womb. From five months, an unborn baby can hear the world around them. Early exposure to music encourages babies to develop their musical ear which supports all aspects of early learning and development. Just as language skills are developed early in life, so is musical talent. Regardless of the level of music aptitude with which children are born, they must have formal and informal experiences in music to maintain that level of potential.
