I have always had a love of music and I particularly love to sing! I also studied psychology at university which fostered a keen interest in child development. When I had my son, aside from singing to him all the time, I was keen to find a baby music class to enjoy together that would also support his development. I discovered Monkey Music and I was immediately hooked, as was he! I still recall the pure joy of my son’s reaction to new sounds as a baby when he followed them around the room and then the progression to his own pride when making sounds with the instruments. It was a truly special experience. Owning a Monkey Music franchise is my absolute dream role and the reaction on the little ones’ faces as they hear these incredible new sounds is one of my favourite parts of teaching!

For me, Monkey Music is the perfect balance between fun and learning – the structure creates a familiarity which helps children feel relaxed and at home during the class, but the change in content across the weeks means classes stay fresh and interesting. The original songs are lively and varied and the fact that each of the classes is crammed with lovely activities, dances, props and beautiful percussion instruments means there is so much to experience.

The unique four-stage progressive curriculum is age specific and introduces children to all aspects of rhythm, pitch and tempo. We have special percussion instruments, ranging from drums; a firm favourite of the toddlers, to rain makers and wind chimes that totally captivate the babies with their magical sounds. Each child can touch and play with a range of instruments creating their own music. We also use rhymes, puppets and visual and sensory props to ensure each song comes to life. Coming to Monkey Music classes is such a special way to share precious time with your little one as well as helping their development.

Our classes are deliberately 30 minutes long. There has been a lot of research to suggest that any longer than 30 minutes can be overwhelming for little ones and they will lose focus and attention. We ensure those 30 minutes are action-packed and follow a structure each week to allow your child to remain focused and enjoy every element of the class.

Babies, from 3 months, begin with our gentle Rock'n'Roll class where there is plenty of emphasis on using music as a lovely bonding exercise for carer and child, whilst providing social, interactive and musical learning experiences for both. Babies are encouraged to track the beautiful musical sounds and to reach out and grasp the specially chosen percussion instruments.

At around 12 months our toddlers love to be up on their feet so they are ready for Heigh-Ho! In this exciting, upbeat class, they learn to play their instruments with greater autonomy and join in with the music by watching and responding to instructions and through their own wonderful creativity.

By 2 years, our little ones are more independent and want to play for themselves! In Jiggety-Jig we harness their sense of rhythm as they learn to play in time with the music and grow the confidence to contribute their own ideas and compositions. They learn to concentrate a little more and develop skills of sharing and turn-taking that they will take to Pre-School.

In Ding-Dong, our final stage for 3-4 year olds, the children start to learn about the orchestra, rhythm, graphic notation and get to experience all the instruments too. We also introduce small elements of performance to help build their confidence.

It is truly amazing to see how the children grow and develop in confidence and the age specific curricula is key to this. Grouped into small classes by age, we focus on the children's learning and developmental stages in a fun, friendly and safe environment. Babies and children are encouraged by the teacher and parents/carers to experiment with the instruments, props and explore the musical resources around them.
