Welcome to my classes in

Kingston and Surbiton

Ursula Fitzpatrick and Bill Matthews

speech bubbleEmail Ursula   phone0208 224 3971

We are Ursula Fitzpatrick and Bill Matthews and we run Monkey Music’s award-winning classes for pre-school children in Kingston, Surbiton and Thames Ditton. Monkey Music started in 1993. This area was one of the first in the country to launch classes and they have continued ever since. We took over running the franchise in 2010, and since then numbers have increased by 40%. In fact, Monkey Music is now the most popular pre-school music class in the Kingston, Surbiton and Thames Ditton area.

Since we don’t teach ourselves, we are lucky enough to have an excellent team of teachers, who inspire great loyalty among both children and carers alike. In fact, two of our teachers have been nominated for the prestigious What’s On 4 Little Ones award.  So, come a join in the magic of Monkey Music, we’d love you meet you and your little monkeys very soon.

About Monkey Music’s baby and toddler classes in Surrey – Kingston, Surbiton and Thames Ditton.

We started out as customers and ended up running the classes! We brought our little boy Dylan to Monkey Music and loved the variety and originality of the classes, and that they were educational as well as great fun!

Ursula previously worked in local government and is very happy to be working from home after too many years commuting. Bill’s only direct musical connection is as co-deviser of the BBC2 music quiz Never Mind The Buzzcocks, as well as the comedy sports quiz They Think It’s All Over.

Why Monkey Music?

Research shows that early exposure to singing, listening and playing music is essential in helping a child’s early development. Babies’ motor skills can be accelerated and improved by introducing them to child-friendly handheld percussion instruments. Their awareness of space and others around them is enhanced through socialising with others in the group and through the gentle movements they follow during the music class.

Monkey Music nurtures a child’s natural love of music that will last a lifetime. Based on a progressive curriculum, we provide weekly music classes that are entertaining and educational, imaginatively taught by qualified teachers who gently encourage social and musical skills within a fun, stimulating and friendly environment.

As the children experiment with playing their percussion instruments, they hear and wonder at the different sounds they produce. As we all know, repetition at this age is essential, so some songs will be repeated at each class, so the children are comforted by the familiarity. By the time they are toddlers, they will be developing their language skills and try to sing sounds to music, sometimes using formed words.

Many lifelong friendships are formed during music classes, and the children will continue to benefit as they develop musically throughout their pre-school years. If children have classes which are both fun and nurturing, ultimately it may inspire a passion for music which continues for the whole of their lives.

Classes are grouped by age

Rock 'n' Roll – from 3 months, Heigh-Ho – from 12 months, Jiggety-Jig – from 2 years, Ding-Dong – from 3 years. Monkey Music introduces music to babies and toddlers in a fun way they can easily understand and enjoy, with musically-trained  teachers who gently encourage social and musical skills within a fun, stimulating and friendly environment.

Classes are small and tailor-made, and the teachers make full use of the lively 30 minute classes to captivate the children using a winning combination of catchy music, percussion instruments, visual props and boundless energy, with lots of opportunities for the children to experiment with the instruments and make music of their own.

Over 300 songs (most of them specially written), musical games and exciting movement ideas are used throughout the curriculum - as the children move up through the classes, you will watch their musical skills develop before your very eyes!

All customers are offered a free class so they can decide if they wish to sign up.

What is the difference between the classes?

Rock 'n' Roll – for babies from 3 months

Designed specifically for carers and babies to share together. During each class the babies and adults are engaged through gentle songs, fascinating sounds and absorbing activities. The classes are very soothing and restful, and rather lovely.

Heigh Ho – for babies and toddlers from 12 months

Young toddlers love being up on their feet so lots of dancing and movement encourages the children to explore the space around them and express the music they hear. Themed classes and bold colourful props enchant the children and encourage everyone to get involved.

Jiggety Jig – for toddlers from 2 years

By this stage, children can really express the joy that music brings them.  They sing, dance, play, move, speak, and listen to music together, while developing their sense of rhythm. Hoops, parachute games and circle dances are always popular Jiggety-Jig activities.

Ding Dong – for older toddlers from 3 years

The final stage of the Monkey Music curriculum.  In these classes, children have fun developing their musical skills, and try out different instruments, and even start to read music, with simple traditional notation introduced through musical games and songs.

What’s Next?

And Then?

If you then decide to join, following your child’s free class, we will sign up your child until the end of the current term. We hope this will be just the beginning of your child’s time with Monkey Music in Kingston, Surbiton and Thames Ditton. We have many children who join us as three month old babies and go right through to Ding-Dong classes. However, if you can’t do that, due to going back to work or other commitments, we are happy to welcome your child for as long as he or she can come to classes.

We also offer sibling and twins’ discounts, and if one child attends or has attended our classes, any sibling will automatically be offered half-price membership.
