With my own family I have seen the joy that music brings to the very young, regardless of ability, which makes Monkey Music an exceptional place to begin their musical pathway.

As with so many families music has always been part of our daily lives, and so with my own background in musical theatre, at home my family still happily trips over the much-loved instruments to gather around the piano for a song.

I am delighted to be part of the teaching team with experts in the field of music and pre school development, professional musicians and performers. Our specialist teachers are selected not only for their evident musical talent, but also for their natural ability to communicate with and entertain young children and their families.

Music plays an important role in the early development of a child. As children we are instinctive music makers and as parents we naturally try to use music to sooth and calm children. Research has shown that music can aid all areas of child development. In Monkey Music our curriculum uses songs and activities that are carefully selected for each developmental stage. Learning to move to music, socialise with other babies and families, communicate effectively, develop their fine and gross motor skills through playing and dancing to music. They listen to themselves and others, strengthen their memory and recall skills… the benefits of music are enormous and develop at each stage which is why our classes are grouped according to age. A range of activities is used to stimulate and educate your child at every stage. We teach the children the structure of our classes from the very beginning.

Classes are deliberately small, and make full use of the 30-minute sessions to captivate children. Monkey Music’s tried and tested children’s musical activities use 300 original and traditional songs, musical games and exciting movement ideas throughout the curriculum.

We have four unique age groups, with the babies and children grouped to ensure the ‘best fit’ for your child.

Rock’n’Roll classes  - Babies from 3 months enjoy gentle songs and absorbing activities with sensory stimulation and specialist instruments.

Heigh Ho classes  - Toddlers from 12 months get up on their feet and develop gross motor skills with activities such as clapping rhythms and dancing to their favourite songs.

Jiggety Jig classes  - 2 and 3 year old children are now displaying a range of musical skills on a variety of instruments and even begin to compose their own music.

Ding Dong classes - 3 and 4 year old children at this stage can read music and explore instruments of the orchestra. Musical activities are explored in more detail. They compose, listen and sing on their own and in groups.

As for progress  - Often a child that has spent the entire first class glued to a carers lap will grow in confidence and self-esteem so rapidly that they are able to collect their own instruments and participate fully in the same song or activities only a few weeks later. This development is gained by experiencing the structure and routine of the class, knowing what to expect, feeling part of a group and being involved in the experience.

We have yet to meet a child whose face doesn’t light up when offered a drum to beat or a maraca to shake with the rest of the group. In fact all children are born with instinctive musicality but it takes early encouragement to enable a baby or child to fulfil their full musical potential and our Monkey Music curricula honed over 24 years allows them to do so.

Recently Celebrating 24 years of classes Monkey Music is the longest running pre-school music class in the UK. Thousands of babies and preschool children enjoy our weekly classes all over the country. Here in Wandsworth, Tooting and Streatham our classes have become highly sought after.

Since classes started Monkey Music has been nominated and won many prestigious mother and baby awards, including the Best National Pre-Schooler Development Activity Award and the Best National Toddler Development Class.

The roots of Monkey Music have grown from professional music sources.  Classes began in 1993 created and inspired by Guildhall School of Music and Drama graduate Angie Coates, Monkey Music’s Founder and Managing Director.  Monkey Music’s popularity led to the company being franchised in the late 1990s.

There are now more than 50 franchises across the country operating in more than 300 locations across the UK.

Monkey Music arrived in Wandsworth SW18, Tooting SW17, and Streatham SW16, over 18 years ago. We continue to run classes locally in venues carefully chosen for easy access, space for buggies including all the equipment that accompanies a little one. Several have onsite cafés where you can enjoy a coffee and a chat with other classmates before or after the lessons.

Many lasting friendships are formed at our classes.
