It's wonderful to be offering Monkey Music's award-winning classes here in Wimbledon, Raynes Park and Merton Park, covering all of SW19 and SW20. As a child I learned the violin and treble recorder and sang in school and local church choirs. Then for a long-time music wasn’t really part of my life, unless you count teenage rock concerts and dancing ‘til dawn to the latest tunes. However, as my children grew up and I found myself with a little bit more time I joined a local community choir and have been singing my heart out there, on Monday evenings, for the last 8 years. I know that my love of music stems from having been involved in it from an early age. And I really believe that it is good for your soul. When I sing at choir I forget everything else and my brain gets a rest from life in general. For our children the benefits are even more profound. I’m really fascinated and excited by the amazing benefits we can be bringing to our children through active engagement with music. Studies have shown that music affects the physical, emotional, and intellectual development of babies and children. It strengthens cognitive and sensory development and exposing your baby to music can activate the neural pathways responsible for many skills such as creativity and spatial intelligence. Coming to Monkey Music classes is such a fun and special way to have precious time with your little one as well as helping their development.

Our Monkey Music classes are for babies (from 3 months old), toddlers and children up to 4 years and have been honed over the past 25 years to ensure we are making the most of the 30 minute lessons.  The progressive lessons are written especially for each age group.  We offer a safe, supportive and nurturing environment, where parents, carers and children meet in small groups to enjoy our interactive musical activities.  Our classes are packed with learning opportunities, specially written Monkey Music songs and lots of wonderful instruments which the children play along with. We know that children learn best when they are enjoying themselves so our small classes captivate and educate through structured, social music making.

Studies show that babies who engage in moving to music and music making use more communicative gestures, smile more and are more confident than babies whose experience is to listen more passively to music. Moving to music with our babies also triggers the release of oxytocin which is the hormone that helps us bond with them. Further research has shown that playing with patterns in music helps to set firm foundations for early maths and reading skills. As you can see the overall benefits to their development are really very profound providing the support for their development.

At our interactive lessons, kids learn to use their own instruments to make sounds and they move their bodies to the music, developing co-ordination and fine motor skills. Bring your own instruments – be as creative as you want! It’s always good to have something to shake and something to bang for your session. Our classes for babies, from 3 months, begin with our gentle Rock'n'Roll class where there is plenty of emphasis on using music as a lovely bonding exercise for carer and child, whilst providing social, interactive and musical learning experiences for both. Babies are encouraged to track the beautiful musical sounds and to reach out and grasp the specially chosen percussion instruments. At around 12 months our toddlers love to be up on their feet so they are ready for Heigh-Ho! In this exciting, up-beat class, they learn to play their instruments with greater autonomy and join in with the music by watching and responding to instructions and through their own wonderful creativity. By 2 years, our little ones are more independent and want to play for themselves! So in Jiggety-Jig we harness their sense of rhythm as they learn to play in time with the music and grow the confidence to contribute their own ideas and compositions. They learn to concentrate a little more and develop skills of sharing and turn-taking that they will take to Pre-School. Ding-Dong, our final stage for 3-4 year old children, introduces our very grown-up pre-schoolers to the wonderful world of the orchestra! We learn how to read and write music using graphic and traditional notation and the children play their compositions to each other.

Of course, it’s not just the children who love Monkey Music. All the adults (and siblings) who come along have a great time too, sharing precious time together and singing along with the children as well as having the support of other parents around them. We all share in the milestones your little one reaches at each stage of development and we feel so lucky to be there for first claps, waves, steps and words.

I teach Monkey Music  at some local nurseries and I am lucky to have a small team of amazing specialist teachers who will be leading the way in our lovely venues around SW19 and SW20, whilst I am very much running things in the background. You can read more about our teachers below.

Can babies relate to music at such a young age? The ear is the first organ to develop fully in the womb. From five months, an unborn baby can hear the world around them. Early exposure to music encourages babies to develop their musical ear which supports all aspects of early learning and development.
Just as language skills are developed early in life, so is musical talent. Regardless of the level of music aptitude with which children are born, they must have formal and informal experiences in music to maintain that level of potential.
Can my partner and I both bring our baby to Beautiful Noise? Yes, Beautiful Noise is perfect for parents who attend on their own or with a partner.
How long is each Beautiful Noise face-to-face class or Beautiful Noise event? Each Beautiful Noise face-to-face class and Beautiful Noise event is an hour long. This gives everyone lots of time to settle/feed/change before Beautiful Noise begins and at the end before leaving.
Can I feed my baby during Beautiful Noise? Yes, of course. We understand that you will want to make yourself and your baby as comfortable as possible during Beautiful Noise and you may feed/change/sleep whenever you feel like it!
What happens if my baby sleeps all the way through Beautiful Noise? Beautiful Noise has been created so that you and Baby can share precious time together whilst enjoying it for mutual reasons and for different reasons. Our teachers understand that our youngest babies need their sleep so if your baby sleeps peacefully during Beautiful Noise then you will be encouraged to join in whilst they sleep close by.
How and when do I receive my Beautiful Noise online sessions? Our Beautiful Noise online sessions are sent via email to all members of our Beautiful Noise programmes and Beautiful Noise events after attendance at the face to face session and have been created so that you can practice at home what you and Baby have learned at Beautiful Noise.
What is in the Beautiful Noise Kit Bag? Inside the Beautiful Noise Kit Bag (a linen tote) you will find a Monkey Music wave drum, Monkey Music maracito and a sensory scarf. You will be encouraged to use these instruments and the sensory scarf at home when joining in with the online sessions.
What makes Monkey Music weekly classes so special? Monkey Music has been established for over 30 years and is proud to have a rich musical heritage. We offer a unique and progressive learning experience for your child, which is supported by over 500 original songs and musical activities. Monkey Music classes are considered a leading light in pre-school education. Our talented teachers are carefully chosen and trained to offer the highest standard of pre-school music education. Come along for a free class to see for yourself what make Monkey Music classes the highlight of the week for so many families across the UK!
What do the weekly Monkey Music classes involve? Monkey Music is an interactive award winning musical curriculum. The regular weekly classes are small and tailor-made for babies and young children who are grouped according to their age. Each child is accompanied by their carer. Little ones sing, dance and play musical instruments. Grown ups join in the fun too!
How much does a class cost? The price for classes in the area you would like to attend is shown during the booking process and you can also ask at your local Monkey Music Office.
Can I try a class before I sign up to the monthly rolling subscription for weekly classes? Yes. You and your child are invited along for a free complimentary class when making an initial booking enquiry.
How does payment for weekly classes work? After your first free class your place at class is reserved for you for 2 working days from the date and time of the free class. If you go on to confirm your place, payment for your monthly rolling subscription for classes will be taken on the 1st working day of each month for the classes booked in that calendar month that are due for payment. Customers joining midway through a calendar month will be charged for the remainder of classes in that calendar month, save where you book to join for the last class of a month and in this case the amount you will pay when making the booking will include the cost for the classes in the next month when classes are offered. Customers booking during a holiday break prior to the start of a teaching period will pay for their first calendar month of classes when making their booking.
When do classes run? Regular classes run during class teaching periods (please check the timetable for the area you would like to attend classes, details of the sort breaks and holiday breaks will be listed there). Many areas also run seasonal Holiday Workshops and Events during the class break periods.
How many children are in a class? Places are limited and will vary from venue to venue. Our maximum capacity is 15 children per class.
Can I bring a newborn baby too? Babes in arms accompanying older siblings are welcome in our classes free of charge, please speak to your local classes for more information.
Can I catch up a missed class? Subject to eligibility and availability it may be possible to catch up a booked class that you have missed, please contact your local class provider for more details.
Can I swap my class to another day or time? Subject to eligibility and availability it may be possible to swap a booked class, please contact your local class provider for more details.
What do you expect of the children, do they have to sit down the whole time? Each class is carefully structured and formatted so that every child and carer is encouraged to join in with the fun. Classes are paced according to each age group with the opportunity for little ones to be up on their feet during ‘Time to Move’ and sitting with their carers during ‘Time to Play’ and ‘Time to Sleep’. Most children quickly learn what is happening next and Monkey helps them with friendly encouragement!
What do I need to bring with me? Everything you need to enjoy our classes is made available by the teacher, however, should you prefer not to use the Monkey Music instruments provided at class, you may bring your own Monkey Music approved instruments purchased from our online shop or identical items bought elsewhere. You may also bring along your own small blanket for your child to sit on.
Why are most of the Monkey Music classes 30 minutes long? Our classes have been honed and developed over 30 years and are designed to fully captivate babies and young children for the duration. Each 30 minute class is a significant step in our progressive curricula. Classes are carefully planned to maximise the attention span of a very young child so that they learn from sharing a rewarding, enjoyable and worthwhile experience. The very interactive nature of every class means that our little ones need to rest again after 30 minutes of magical music making!
Do you offer ‘mixed age’ classes? Because of the progressive nature of our curricula which is age specific, we do not offer regular weekly mixed age classes. However, during the holidays, many of our teachers offer mixed age holiday workshops and events.
Are all the teachers musically trained? All Monkey music teachers are specifically trained on delivering the Monkey Music curriculum. Many of them are professional musicians and teachers.
Do I have to be musical? No! Our teachers will make you feel welcome whatever your musical ability.
Do I have to sing along? We love it when families sing along and your children will benefit from hearing the sound of a familiar voice, no matter how good or bad! But – there is no pressure to sing because listening, watching and playing the instruments will keep you and your child busy enough! Families may enjoy our songs at home by purchasing our class specific playlists available from our online shop.
Can I bring an adult friend/relative to class? This is usually possible, but we do ask that you contact your local teacher to ask permission beforehand. This is because some of our teaching rooms have maximum levels of occupancy and our teachers need to know who is attending each session, thank you.
Can I opt out of the membership fee? No, our online club is designed to support the learning experience of children at our regular classes and is a popular go-to places between classes to enjoy making Monkey Music at home.
Is it OK for me to take photos or video in class? No, we politely request that you refrain from taking photos or videos at class.
Why don’t you offer drop-in classes? We value musical education as a fundamental part of early development, and as such our regular weekly classes are progressive to maximise the learning potential of each child.
