Music is a fantastic activity that you can enjoy with your baby or toddler, and it provides a beneficial way to communicate with your little one.  We’ve put together some ideas of fun musical activities you can enjoy at home with your baby or toddler when you’re not busy having fun at your weekly Monkey Music class!

Hang a musical mobile - Mobiles that play music stimulate your newborn baby’s vision and hearing at the same time (be sure to hang the mobile out of baby’s reach and remove it once they become old enough to sit up).

Sing with your little one and move to the beat of the music - Singing and swaying/dancing with your baby or young child strengthens the bond between parent and child. Sing or play your favourite songs while holding your baby or toddler and sway to the beat, moving slow for slow songs and picking up the pace for faster ones.

Offer musical toysSimple instruments like shakers, maracas and cage bells are the perfect introduction to the sensory world of early years music-making and help your baby to develop creativity, motor skills, hand-eye co-ordination while teaching cause and effect

Play your old instruments to your baby or toddler - If you have old instruments you used to play, dust them off and play them to your baby!

Make your own instruments - If you don’t have any old instruments don’t worry, the power of pots, pans, and wooden spoons shouldn’t be underestimated!

Make a DIY drum set. For older babies, use an empty ice-cream carton as a makeshift drum, or different-sized plastic containers so they can hear the different sounds. They can use their hands or a wooden spoon - these will both create different sounds for them to enjoy.

The Monkey Music online shop has a wide range of beautiful instruments and musical treats for babies and toddlers to enjoy as well as our bespoke range of wooden instruments for babies and toddlers.
