It's never too early to start reading to your baby. Reading aloud to your baby is a wonderful way to share precious time together as well as being important for your little one’s brain and language development, so the sooner you start the better!

Reading aloud to your baby:

- teaches them about communication

- introduces concepts such as numbers, letters, colours and shapes in a fun way

- builds listening, memory, and vocabulary skills

- gives babies information about the world around them

The more stories you read aloud to your baby, the more words they will hear and the better they'll be able to talk.
When your baby is read to, they’ll hear a range of different emotions and expressive sounds which supports their social and emotional development. Reading to your baby encourages them to look, point, touch, and answer questions which in turn is developing their social and thinking skills and copying sounds, recognising pictures, and learning words helps improve their language skills.

But perhaps the most important reason to read to your baby is that it helps create a connection between you both.  Your baby will love to snuggle up with you and hear your voice, so books with a rhythmic, sing-song or rhyming text are perfect.

When choosing a book to read to your baby, go for books with simple, repetitive text and bright, colourful pictures.
