Why do we sing nursery rhymes to babies and young children?

How many nursery rhymes do you know by heart? The chances are the least one nursery rhyme is etched into your memory... probably more if you’ve been to a Monkey Music class recently! But do you know why we sing nursery rhymes to babies and young children?

Nursery rhymes have more to offer than just entertainment value, they provide learning opportunities for babies and toddlers and singing nursery rhymes with actions is a great way for babies to develop their motor skills and hand-eye coordination and introduce the rhythm and patterns of language.  Your little one will pick up language from the world around them, so singing nursery rhymes is a great way to introduce words they might not hear during an ordinary day.

Some nursery rhymes such as Five Little Ducks teach basic maths concepts, such as counting, which are really important early numeracy skills whereas singing Old Macdonald together can be a great way to introduce animal vocabulary to your child.

Singing rhymes regularly with your little one while you cuddle them is a great way to bond. This then increases the production of a hormone called oxytocin in the brain. Oxytocin is known as the love hormone as it reduces stress and increases relaxation, so it's great for you and your child. And more importantly, sharing precious time together singing nursery rhymes will help strengthen the bond between you and your kid – what could be better?
