Why Real Musical Instruments Matter in Early Music Education at Monkey Music

At Monkey Music, we’re passionate about giving children an authentic musical experience. That’s why, in every class, we use real musical instruments to introduce babies and toddlers to the joys of making music. Here’s a closer look at why using real musical instruments is so beneficial for young learners.

Engaging the Senses
When children interact with real musical instruments, they engage multiple senses at once – touch, hearing, and sight. This sensory experience is crucial in early childhood development, as it helps children learn through exploration. Holding a tambourine, shaking maracas, or banging a drum provides immediate, tangible feedback. The textures and sounds vary with each instrument, keeping their attention and curiosity alive, and boosting their sensory awareness.

Fine Motor Skills Development
Real musical instruments are fantastic for practicing fine motor skills. For babies and toddlers, even holding a musical instrument requires new hand movements and grips, which develop dexterity and hand-eye co-ordination. When children pluck strings, bang drums, or gently shake bells, they’re learning to control their movements with intention. This isn’t just about music – it’s a foundation for physical co-ordination skills they’ll use in everyday life.

Boosting Confidence and Creative Expression
Musical instruments empower children to make their own sound, boosting their confidence and encouraging self-expression. When they realise that shaking a tambourine or tapping a woodblock creates noise, they’re naturally motivated to explore different sounds and rhythms. This early exposure to creative play helps children see music as a form of expression, building confidence to try new things and make creative choices.

Building Musical Foundations
Music has patterns, rhythm, and a structure that children start absorbing even in early years. With real musical instruments, they experience concepts like tempo, rhythm, and melody first hand. Tapping along with a song or attempting a simple beat helps them learn timing and rhythm, foundational skills that will benefit them if they continue in music. This is particularly valuable, as children at this stage learn best through hands-on activities.

Social Interaction and Teamwork
In our Monkey Music classes, real musical instruments also promote social skills. Group play encourages children to share, take turns, and listen to each other, fostering collaboration and teamwork. When they participate in a group song or patiently wait for their turn to play a musical instrument, they’re learning valuable social skills that will help them in other group settings.
