We are Ursula Fitzpatrick and Bill Matthews and we run Monkey Music’s award-winning classes for pre-school children in Kingston, Surbiton and Thames Ditton, which we have been running since 2011.Read more...
Since then numbers have increased by 40%. In fact, Monkey Music is now the most popular pre-school music class in the Kingston, Surbiton and Thames Ditton area.
Since we don’t teach ourselves, we are lucky enough to have an excellent team of teachers in Mary, Karen and Zoe, who inspire great loyalty among both children and carers alike. In fact, two of our teachers have been nominated for the prestigious What’s On 4 Little Ones award.
We brought our little boy Dylan to Monkey Music and loved the variety and originality of the classes, and that they were educational as well as great fun. So we started out as customers and ended up running the classes...
It helps that we have complete belief that Monkey Music is the very best there is in terms of pre-school music classes, being based on a curriculum that is constantly updated, so that the teachers provide a perfect mix of the familiar and the new. While there are some old favourites, most of the songs have been specially written for Monkey Music, many of them based round the famous pink and yellow monkey. Repetition is very important at a young age, but studies show that the brain is stimulated at an early age by hearing something completely new.
We are convinced of the importance of music as an aid to a child’s development, both mentally and physically. All classes include a mix of singing, movement and the chance to play instruments.
We are very much in the background, while our teachers take centre stage. Mary has been teaching for us for over five years, in Surbiton and in Thames Ditton. Her earliest memories are of singing at the age of 3 with her father playing the piano, learning the violin from the age of 5 at her local primary school and singing on stage in reception. She first found out about Monkey Music when the mum with whom she co-organised a song session at her daughter’s primary school became a teacher.
Karen has been teaching for us since 2014. Karen started dancing and singing at the age of three, going on to train in Dance and Musical Theatre at Bird College in South East London. Following a period of commercial dance work, Karen studied for a BA in Contemporary Dance and Drama and went on to more performing and teaching. Karen once danced supporting The Prodigy at The Brighton Centre and sang with a short-lived pop group in The Roadhouse in Covent Garden. Karen lives in Surbiton with her two girls, husband and a whippet called Baxter.
Zoe has been teaching for us since 2017, taking over at St Luke's Church In Kingston. She does most of her teaching for the Woking franchise, so we are delighted that we can 'borrow' her for one morning a week.Read more...

We shall miss Mary greatly. She is such a warm and engaging teacher and her love for music is reflected in the way she teaches. Both our girls have developed a love for music and musical instruments.
Cara absolutely loved her class...special thanks for Karen who I think is very gifted at what she does!
We have loved Monkey Music and we have both got so much out of the sessions. The singalong CD has been the only thing that has kept Archie occupied in the car!
We've really enjoyed our monkey music classes these last couple of years but unfortunately won't be re-enrolling this term. Please pass on our thanks to Mary for the amazing classes.
I wondered also if you could please thank Karen for me. Iris has loved the class and Karen is great. Really love Monkey Music so so will definitely keep it up if / when we have another one

Mary has been teaching for 5 years. She has been performing in the folk group Suntrap for over 20 years, singing and playing the violin, which she started leaning at the age of 5. She believes in the power of music helping with everything from language to fine motor skills to learning to join in.
