Welcome to our classes

Welcome to Monkey Music Kingston, Surbiton and Thames Ditton.  My name is Karen and I am excited to show you just how amazing our fun, educational and progressive classes are for babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers from 3 months to 4 years.

I started dancing and singing at the age of 3 and was lucky enough when I was 16, to attend Bird College in South East London for three years where I studied all aspects of dance, musical theatre, singing and drama.

After college, I performed the Can-Can in Cophenhagen, danced at huge festivals with a techno band in Europe and sang pop in pubs and clubs throughout the UK.

Following a few years of being sensible and working in an office in Central London, I had my babies, first Matilda and then, 2 years later, Edith and of course, loving music myself, I started looking straight away for a baby music class.

Monkey Music was running baby, toddler and preschooler classes in my local area and I could see straight away how wonderful they were with the singing, movement, colourful props, percussion instruments and sensory activities all led by a warm, friendly, knowledgable and entertaining teacher.

Both of my girls took part in all 4 levels; Rock'n'Roll, Heigh-Ho, Jiggety-Jig and Ding-Dong before starting school and the benefits to their development were clear.

Music classes help babies with fine and gross motor skills, they practise following sound and colour with their eyes which is really important for their vision and to encourage them to first reach out to something they are interested in and then to move towards it.  They learn to feel and hear rhythms, familiar songs encourage them to copy with their voices and they experience all the comfort and reassurance they need by spending precious time with an attentive and loving grown up.  As they graduate to the next stage of our progressive curricula, their confidence grows as they discover that they can hold an instrument, play along, move with the music and copy actions like clapping, peek-a-boo, reaching up high and touching their toes.  Our older children develp awareness of the world around them with pretending games, their musical skills grow and they can play different percussion instruments one at a time following the instructions of their teacher.  In their final year with us, the children astound us every time with their ability to remember details about instruments of the symphony orchestera, they are confident percussion musicians playing loudly, quietly, fast and slow and reading notated instructions telling them which instruments to play and how their rhythms will sound.  They can sit and listen, work with their friends and use their voice in front of other people.  Your child's Reception teacher will definitely thank you for sending your child to Monkey Music!

For Matilda, Edith and I, every class was fun for the children and adults too, and of course, being a new mum, it was important for me to have something to get up, dressed and out for, where I could meet new friends for me and the girls.

I loved spending precious time with them as they heard incredible sounds, saw fascinating colours, textures and props, moved in different ways to different kinds of music, joined in with action songs, used their imaginations and played maracas, bells, wood blocks, drums, tambourines, triangles.....Monkey Music have a huge selection of instruments for little ones to explore.

Monkey Music gives babies, toddlers and preschool children with their carer the chance to make sound and rhythm as part of a group which is someting us humans have been doing for thousands of years.  Sitting in a circle and joining in with our voices is a sure fire way to make us feel warm, fuzzy and happy and gives us a sense of belonging.  Rather like being part of a lovely Family Choir!   We encourage the grown ups to sing in class (even if  you don't think you are a good singer!),  because singing has been proven to release "Happy Hormones" and make us feel good.

When I heard that a new teacher was needed in my area, I just had to apply and I have absolutely loved singing, moving, joining in and having the best times with families for the past few years.

Now I am managing all local classes I am passionate about sharing our four, age specific classes that have been carefully crafted to be absolutely perfect for each stage of your preschool child's journey.

As well as our weekly classes, Monkey Music Members get to access music, colouring, games, competitions, discount vouchers and activities through the Little Monkey Club area of our website.  If you Opt In to receive marketing emails, we will also be able to let you know about our exciting Holiday Workshops, Birthday Parties, Weekend Sessions and any other important Monkey Related News.

I and the lovely teachers who work with me would love to welcome you into class soon, so please do click the link to register your details and choose which class you would like to come to for your COMPLIMENTARY class.

Monkey and his little friend Mo can't wait to meet you.

We shall miss Mary greatly. She is such a warm and engaging teacher and her love for music is reflected in the way she teaches. Both our girls have developed a love for music and musical instruments.

I wondered also if you could please thank Karen for me. Iris has loved the class and Karen is great. Really love Monkey Music so so will definitely keep it up if / when we have another one

We have loved Monkey Music and we have both got so much out of the sessions. The singalong CD has been the only thing that has kept Archie occupied in the car!

Karen has taught my children so much not only about music, but about having fun at the same time. She has had such an influence on their learning and development.

Karen is brilliantly natural at inspiring little people and I have enjoyed the classes just as much as my son.

We really enjoyed today, I havent been to many classes yet as I’ve been nervous and anxious about going on my own sometimes but you made me feel really comfortable and welcome. Thank you!

The Monkey Team

Karen Ross

Karen has been teaching Monkey Music since 2013. With a background in Dance and Musical Theatre, Karen brings a sparkle of Showbiz to her classes whilst secretly helping the children learn and develop. Expect lots of smiles, giggles, singing, dancing and of course, wonderful magical sounds.

Mary Wilson

Mary has been teaching Monkey Music for 9 years. An extremely accomplished violinist and mandolin player with the most beautiful singing voice, Mary's classes are steeped in her roots as a folk musician with a focus on making music to nurture every aspect of your child's development.

What do the classes involve? Monkey Music is an interactive award winning musical curriculum. Classes are small and tailor-made for babies and young children who are grouped according to their age. Each child is accompanied by their carer. Little monkeys sing, dance and play musical instruments. Big monkeys join in the fun too!
Can babies relate to music at such a young age? The ear is the first organ to develop fully in the womb. From five months, an unborn baby can hear the world around them. Early exposure to music encourages babies to develop their musical ear which supports all aspects of early learning and development. Just as language skills are developed early in life, so is musical talent. Regardless of the level of music aptitude with which children are born, they must have formal and informal experiences in music to maintain that level of potential.
Are the classes different for each age group? Yes. Our curriculum is structured and progressive. Rock’n'Roll: from 3 months Heigh-Ho: from 12 months Jiggety-Jig: 2 + 3 year olds Ding-Dong: 3 + 4 year olds
Are all the teachers musically trained? All Monkey music teachers are specifically trained on delivering the Monkey Music curriculum. Many of them are professional musicians and teachers.
How long is a class? Half an hour. Each 30 minute class is a significant step in our progressive curricula. Classes are carefully planned to maximise the attention span of a very young child so that they learn from sharing a rewarding, enjoyable and worthwhile experience.
At what age can my child start Monkey Music? From 3 months old.
Can I try a class before I sign up to a course? Yes. You and your child are invited along for a free complimentary class when making an initial booking enquiry.
How much does a class cost? Please ask at your local Monkey Music Office.
Do I have to pay a term in advance? Yes. After your first complimentary class you reserve your place and are invoiced pro rata for the remaining classes in the term. Families who attend our classes will often bond with their teacher and other members of their group. In order to reserve places so that everyone can be together we facilitate a termly booking system. This also encourages our families to attend regularly so that everyone learns new skills at the same pace.
How many children are in a class? Maximum 15
Do classes just run during term time? Regular classes run during term time. Many areas also run seasonal Holiday Workshops during school holidays.
What happens at a Monkey Music Birthday Party? See More Fun on the main website.
How do I become a Monkey Music franchisee? For more details, please click here
Where can I buy Monkey Music merchandise? Please click here.
Why pay a membership fee? When enrolling in Monkey Music for the first time, a child becomes a member of the Little Monkey Club. New members receive a Welcome Pack, including a Monkey Music T-shirt and beautiful sticker pack as well as access to our online club which supports the child in their learning experience at Monkey Music. The membership fee is payable when registering each child in regular weekly classes at Monkey Music and we offer a discount to siblings who join at any stage. Siblings receive their own welcome pack and T-shirt to wear to class. Ask your local classes for more details.
Is it OK for me to take photos or video in class? No, we politely request that you refrain from taking photos or videos at class.
Can I opt out of the membership fee? No, our online club is designed to support the learning experience of children at our regular classes.
Can I bring a sibling? Yes! We offer discounts for siblings, ask your local classes for more details.
Do I have to sing along? We love it when our customers join in and your children benefit from hearing the sound of a familiar voice, no matter how good or bad!
Do I have to be musical? No! Our teachers will make you feel welcome whatever your musical ability.
Why don’t you offer drop-in classes? We value musical education as a fundamental part of early development, and as such our regular weekly classes are progressive to maximise the learning potential of each child.
Can I bring my newborn too? Yes! Newborn babies are welcome in our classes, please speak to your local classes for more information.
What do I need to bring with me? Everything you need to enjoy our classes is provided by the teacher.
What if I can’t make my usual class? You are welcome to catch up with any classes that you miss. Speak to your local classes to book a catch up class.
What makes Monkey Music classes so special? Monkey Music classes are considered a leading light in pre-school education. Come along for a free class to see for yourself what make Monkey Music classes the highlight of the week for so many families across the UK!
Why is Monkey Music more expensive than the other music groups around? Monkey Music has been established for over 25 years and is proud to have a rich musical heritage. We offer a unique and progressive learning experience for your child, which is supported by over 500 original songs and musical activities. Our talented teachers are carefully chosen and trained to offer the highest standard of pre-school music education.
Why are Monkey Music classes 30 minutes long? Our classes have been honed and developed over 25 years and are designed to fully captivate babies and young children for the duration. The very interactive nature of every class means that our little monkeys need to rest again after 30 minutes of magical music making!
What do you expect of the children, do they have to sit down the whole time? Each class is carefully structured and formatted so that every child and carer is encouraged to join in with the fun. Classes are paced according to each age group with the opportunity for little ones to be up on their feet during ‘Time to Move’ and sitting with their carers during ‘Time to Play’ and ‘Time to Sleep’. Most children quickly learn what is happening next and Monkey helps them with friendly encouragement!
Do you offer ‘mixed age’ classes? Because of the progressive nature of our curricula which is age specific, we do not offer regular weekly mixed classes. However, during the holidays, many of our teachers offer mixed age holiday workshops.
