What kind of music do babies like?

Whether it's nursery rhymes, classical music or the latest pop hits, most babies are simply captivated by music!

Music with a fast tempo mimics your baby’s fast heart rate and as such, babies are stimulated most by music with a fast tempo. They are also likely to respond positively to music with a regular rhythm and musical repetition.

But music doesn’t have to be all about stimulating your baby. Babies rely on their parents or carers to help soothe and calm them when they’re tired and need to sleep, and gentle music with a slow tempo helps to turn off pain receptors in their brains and helps to prepare them for sleep.

Lullabies have been used by many cultures for thousands of years to destimulate babies and soothe them to sleep and listening to, or singing lullabies to your baby or toddler is a multi-sensory experience. Typically when a parent or carer plays or sings a lullaby to a baby, they hold the baby close and rock them gently.  This provides your baby with simultaneous rhythmic information from both the lullaby and from the rocking.

Try a variety of different musical styles and see how your baby responds. Think about the music you enjoy and incorporate that into your baby’s playlist. If you like it, your baby will probably enjoy it too!

At Monkey Music we have created specific playlists that you can download from our online Monkey Music Shop to enjoy with your baby at home or on the move.

Our Rock’n’Roll with Monkey & Mo playlist is full of favourite songs and lullabies from our Rock'n'Roll classes and is perfect for babies and toddlers to enjoy but if you’re looking for something to enjoy together during the quieter moments of the day and night then our Time to Sleep playlist which is a soothing selection of gentle Monkey Music songs is the perfect solution.
